The fan is blowing, but the air coming out of the vents is just as warm as the air outside. ❄️

If your air conditioning is not blowing cold, the cause is almost always one of five, and they differ enormously in both complexity and consequences. In the worst case you can destroy the compressor along the way, which is the most expensive part of the system. Below is how to tell one cause from another by the symptoms, what you can check yourself today, and the point at which it is better to stop experimenting.

Can you drive with a faulty air conditioner?

You can. Air conditioning is not a safety system, and a failure does not stop you driving. There is one condition, though: if the air is no longer cold, do not leave the air conditioning switched on hoping that it will cool down eventually. Oil circulates through the system together with the refrigerant and lubricates the compressor, and in an empty system the compressor runs practically dry.

There is a second thing that gets forgotten in summer: air conditioning dries the air. That is exactly why the windows clear far faster on a rainy autumn morning with it than without it. So by September a faulty air conditioner turns from a comfort question into a visibility question.

And if the compressor has started to fail, it can seize the drive belt. On older cars that is a single belt which also turns the alternator and the coolant pump, so you go from “the air is not cold” to “the car is parked on the roadside” in one moment.

Reason 1: the system is simply low on refrigerant

How to spot it: the air is cool but not cold. It has got worse gradually, over several seasons, and last summer everything still seemed fine. Often the air conditioning still pulls in the morning or the evening, but cannot cope in the midday heat.

This is the most common cause and also the most harmless. The system is not hermetically sealed by nature: some refrigerant escapes over the years through hose seals and connections. That is completely normal for a used car that has not had a refill since it was bought.

What the garage does: the system is emptied, a vacuum is drawn, we check whether the vacuum holds, and only then is it filled with a precisely weighed amount of refrigerant. “Topping it up a little” is not a refill.

Reason 2: there is a leak in the system

How to spot it: the air conditioning was refilled last season or the one before, and now it is blowing warm again. Under the front of the car or around the connections there may be oily marks with dust stuck to them, because the oil escapes together with the refrigerant.

This is the place for one warning: A REFILL WITHOUT LOOKING FOR THE LEAK IS MONEY THROWN INTO THE AIR. If the system empties within a year, that is not natural loss, it is a hole in the system. The usual culprit is the condenser at the front of the car that has been hit by a stone off the road, a corroded aluminium pipe or a dried-out O-ring.

What the garage does: a contrast dye is added to the system, or nitrogen is connected under pressure, and we find the point where it escapes. The part is then repaired, and only after that is the system refilled.

Reason 3: a clogged cabin filter or evaporator

How to spot it: hold your hand up to the vents. If the air is cold but there is very little of it, the problem is not the cooling, it is the airflow. Other signs: the fan sounds louder than it used to, there is a smell of a cellar or a dirty cloth in the cabin, the windows fog up faster than they should.

The cabin filter is one of the cheapest parts in a car and one of the most frequently forgotten. When it is full of leaves, dust and winter road salt, the airflow drops so far that the cabin simply does not have time to cool down.

The evaporator behind the dashboard is damp and dark, so bacteria and mould grow on it. That is the smell that appears in the first few seconds after you switch the air conditioning on.

If you are not sure which of these signs applies to your car, send a short description to info@2drive.lv or WhatsApp – describe what is happening and we will tell you whether it can wait until the next service.

Reason 4: a dirty condenser or a fan that is not working

How to spot it: this is the easiest case to recognise. On the motorway the air is cold, but in a traffic jam or at the lights it slowly turns warm. As soon as you pick up speed again, the cold comes back.

The reason is that the condenser at the front of the car has to get rid of heat, and for that it needs airflow. While you are driving, the oncoming air provides it; while you are standing still, the fan has to. If the fan does not come on, or the condenser fins are clogged with fluff, insects and road dirt, the heat has nowhere to go. 🌡

It is also worth keeping an eye on the temperature gauge here. The same fan often cools the engine as well, so overheating can start at the same time as the warm air in the cabin. In that case we are no longer talking about comfort alone, and the whole cooling system needs to be checked.

Reason 5: the compressor or its control is not working

How to spot it: when you switch the air conditioning on, there is no click in the engine bay and the engine revs do not change at all. The system does not come on at all, rather than working weakly.

Possible causes: a blown fuse or relay, a faulty electromagnetic compressor clutch, a worn drive belt, a pressure sensor that deliberately blocks the system from starting because there is too little refrigerant, or the compressor itself, which has suffered mechanical damage.

The good news: the culprit is often a sensor or the electrics, not the compressor. The bad news: if the compressor really has broken, metal shavings spread throughout the whole system, and then the drier has to be replaced and the pipework flushed as well.

How to tell why your air conditioning is not blowing cold

What you notice

When it happens

Most likely cause

Urgency

Air is cool but not cold

Gradually, over several seasons

Low on refrigerant

Low, but sort it before the heat arrives

The cold disappeared within a year of a refill

Repeats every season

A leak in the system

Medium, another refill will not help

Air is cold but the flow is weak, there is a smell

After winter, or ever since you bought the car

Clogged cabin filter, dirty evaporator

Low, but it affects how fast the windows clear

Cold while driving, warm while standing still

In traffic jams and hot weather

Dirty condenser or a fan that is not working

High, the engine can overheat at the same time

No click when you switch it on, nothing happens

Suddenly, without warning

Compressor, sensor or electrics

High, the compressor is running dry

How an air conditioning check works at the 2Drive garage

A conversation and pinning down the symptoms. First we establish whether the cold disappeared suddenly or gradually, and whether it differs between driving and standing still. That alone narrows the field.

Visual inspection. We look at the condenser, the belt, the connections and any oily marks that give away a leak.

Pressure measurement. We connect the equipment and look at the high and low pressures, because the ratio between them shows whether refrigerant is missing or the problem lies elsewhere.

Leak detection, if the pressures point that way. Contrast dye or nitrogen, depending on the situation.

Servicing the system. Vacuum, a refill with a weighed amount, and a control measurement once the work is done. If needed, a cabin filter change and disinfection.

We do all of this in a single visit, as long as no parts have to be ordered separately. You can read more about what the service covers on the air conditioner repair and refilling page.

What does the price of an air conditioning repair depend on?

There is no single price, because the words “the air conditioning is not working” bring us everything from a five-minute job to half a day of work. The amount comes down to whether only a refill is needed or leak detection as well, how much has to be dismantled to reach the faulty part, which refrigerant your system uses, and whether a cabin filter change and disinfection are being done at the same time.

Older cars and newer cars use different refrigerants, and that changes both the working method and the cost. It also happens that after a leak repair the drier has to be replaced too, because it has been left open to the atmosphere.

We tell you the exact amount for your car before the work starts, and we add nothing along the way without agreeing it with you first. Call +371 27024232 and give us the make, model, year of manufacture and exactly how the problem shows itself.

What to do now

Check the airflow and the temperature separately. Switch the air conditioning on, turn the fan up to maximum and hold your hand up to the vents. Weak flow with cold air means one problem; strong flow with warm air – a completely different one.

Switch it on with the car stationary and listen. If there is no click in the engine bay, that is already useful information for the mechanic.

Do not drive with the air conditioning on if it is not blowing cold. Switch it off and book a check while this is still about a refill and not about a compressor.

Frequently asked questions

How often does a car air conditioner need refilling?

There is no fixed interval, because a system does not lose refrigerant at an even rate. In practice, a used car usually needs a refill with a system check once every two to three years. If it is needed more often than that, it is no longer maintenance but a leak that has to be found and fixed.

Should the air conditioning be switched on in winter too?

Yes. Run it for ten to fifteen minutes at least once a month, in cold weather as well. That keeps the oil circulating through the system, which keeps the seals supple, and dried-out seals are one of the most common causes of leaks in spring.

Why does an unpleasant smell come from the air conditioning?

Moisture condenses on the evaporator behind the dashboard, and in warm weather bacteria and mould form there. Disinfecting the system together with a cabin filter change helps. As a preventive measure, switch the air conditioning off a few minutes before the end of a journey so the evaporator has time to dry.

Does air conditioning increase fuel consumption?

Yes, the compressor takes power from the engine, so consumption goes up. On the other hand, open windows create so much air resistance on the motorway that the saving disappears. In town the windows are more economical; on the motorway, the air conditioning.

Why is there no price table for air conditioning repairs on your website?

Because one price for every car would be untrue. A refill, leak detection and a condenser replacement are three completely different jobs, and the type of refrigerant differs even between cars of the same make. We would rather tell you the exact amount for your car before the work starts.

Air conditioning not blowing cold?
